Chronicles Software: Keeping a Journal Will Never be the Same
Ruth Folit will tell you that if you're still using pen and paper for journal writing, you're in the dark ages.
The
brains behind a new software program called LifeJournal™, Folit has
revolutionized the art of computer journaling. Her program has been
endorsed by Kathleen Adams, author of the book Journal to the Self,
as well as USA Today best-selling author Barbara Bretton. She won an
award from McGraw-Hill for meshing computers and writing and she just
returned from the National Association of Poetry Therapy where, as she
puts it, "They went crazy for it."
How did this little lady
come to produce such a powerful tool? "I was looking for a new
direction," she laughs. "I had worked in the environmental field for 15
years and even though I enjoyed the work, it wasn't quite gratifying
enough."
Fast forward to 1996. "I was looking for something to
do so I took a class at Ringling [School of Art and Design] in
multimedia design," she says. "That got me interested in software
design so I signed up for a few classes at USF in Tampa to see where it
would lead me. Meanwhile, I was still journaling on paper, fool that I
was."
That's when it hit her. What about journaling software!
"I did my research and discovered that the only [journal writing]
programs that were available were glorified word processing," Folit
says. "I knew I could do much better."
Folit started putting
sticky notes all over her walls whenever she had an idea until finally
she had to use a step stool to get to more wall space. "That's when I
knew I had to hire a programmer to get the ball rolling," she says. She
also found a business partner who helped her with a business plan and
gave her some creative input.
Eventually, Folit also hired a
graphic artist and technical writer and her team went to work. "We
would meet in my kitchen on weekends, order out food, and refine the
program," she recalls. "It actually took over a year and a half for the
programmer to complete the task. And in May of 1999 the first version
of LifeJournal came out."
Since then, Folit has sold almost
15,000 copies through her company, Chronicles Software. Most of these
have been sold online at www.lifejournal.com.
At only $39.95 it makes a great gift for graduation, birthdays, people
who are keeping track of their health, anyone who want to grow
personally or professionally or anyone who want to write memoirs. |
