March 2009
This month our newsletter’s focus is on journal writing and traveling. I read and reviewed the book Globejotting:How to Write Extraordinary Travel Journals.
The book inspired me so, that it kicked up a memory of a hilarious
anecdote from a trip 30 years ago, that I had almost forgotten. I hope
it inspires you to write about some or your memorable travel stories,
and also do include journal writing on your next trip.
We are offering some new webinars. If you haven’t attended a webinar,
you’ll be pleasantly surprised how technologically easy they are, how
efficient they are (no traveling time or expense!), and how you have
immediate access to experts from the comfort of your home. Here is
information about three upcoming webinars:
1. We have two spots left for the Writing for Emotional Balance
webinar. The first of four sessions begins Tuesday, March 17 at 8-9 PM
eastern time (5-6 PM Pacific). Hurry, there’s not much time left to enroll!
2. Announcing a new webinar with life purpose and creativity coach Tina Games-Evan: Journaling by the Moonlight.
This webinar is for women looking to the moon as metaphor for personal
growth and using journal writing as the tool. Four sessions meet
Thursday daytimes in April. Learn more!
3. Announcing a new webinar with longtime journal instructor, Sue Meyn: Invest in Yourself.
This is a webinar for our turbulent times, about how to use your
journal to tap into your inner abundant resources. Four sessions meet
Wednesday evenings in April. Learn more!
Hope to see you soon at a webinar!
Sincerely,
Ruth Folit

Review of the book Globejotting: How to Write Extraordinary Travel Journals by Dave Fox
Dave Fox’s book Globejotting: How to Write Extraordinary Travel Journals
is an enjoyable and worthy read. Dave’s forte is his deep knowledge of
keeping a journal while traveling. Part of the excitement and appeal
for traveling is that it is an adventure—you don’t know what your
destination will be like, who you’ll meet, what the local customs are,
or how you’ll find your way. He discusses emotions that people
commonly feel when traveling—fear, excitement, exhaustion,
exhilaration—and how they affect your journal writing. Fox also
discusses the issues many—traveling or non-traveling—journal writers
have in common: for example how to write in depth, rather than just
what-I-did-today reporting; and how to overcome self-censorship.
A recurring theme in the book is how to handle the conflict between
experiencing the traveling vs. writing about it. This is a continuous
dilemma for every person who travels and who also wants to record the
trip in some form.

An Afternoon Canoeing in the Everglades
[Globejotting author, Dave Fox has such an infectious passion for
travel writing, that after reading his book I dredged up a memory of a
crazy but true travel story that occurred more than 30 years ago when
my husband I took a trip to the Everglades. I should be preparing my
taxes, but instead I wrote this. Hope this inspires you to stop working
on your taxes and have some fun writing.--RF]
Marc and I were in the
Everglades for a few days escaping the cold December weather of New
Jersey. We were visiting friends in Sarasota, and they were kind
enough to lend us their car for a couple of days so we could visit the
“real Florida,” We headed to the Everglades. We had no plans and no
equipment except for a couple of sleeping bags, but being 25 years old
and spontaneous adventurers, that wasn’t a barrier.
