LifeJournal Newsletter
Welcome to the monthly LifeJournal newsletter! We
have been working diligently on LifeJournal 2 for many months and
decided to spend our time focused fully on creating, testing, and
refining our new version. So, we took a short hiatus from writing our newsletter. We’re happy to be back in touch with the LifeJournal community at large and are
very excited to formally announce the release of LifeJournal 2. As always, please let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.
Sincerely,
Ruth Folit

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NEW VERSION, LifeJournal 2:
We are thrilled with our newest product, LifeJournal 2 (LJ2). It
has the same structure as LifeJournal 1 (LJ1) yet has much more power,
flexibility, and customizability than previous versions. In creating
LJ2 we listened carefully to our customers who had many thoughts about
how to preserve and expand our program. Energetic software companies
who have strong relationships with their clients—as Chronicles Software
Company does—view software as a work-in-progress. We are constantly improving the program based upon your input.
- Each Journal Entry now has an attached Topics Sidebar,
so
you can easily assign topics to the entire entry or journal passages.
Assigning topics lets you quickly find important writing when you later
perform a search. Highlights (color behind the text) show passages to
which you have assigned topics.
- LifeJournal 2 lets you create up to six Journal Types.
In addition to the default Daily, Dream, and Life History journal
entries, you can now add three other Journal Types. To do so, go to File
menu>Manage Journal Types.
- You can now create up to 10 Daily Pulse scales.
The original Daily Pulse scales of LJ1, Mood, Stress, Energy, Health,
are defined by default. You can change these and/or add six others, and
create your own measurement units. See the article below, Tips: Adding Your Own Daily Pulse Scales, for step-by-step instructions on how to do this
- The Journal Explorer
lets you not only quickly view your past journal entries, but quickly
search for specific sets of entries. You can easily show/hide the
Journal Explorer by clicking the toolbar button. And in response to the
many suggestions from the LJ community, LJ2 now includes a calendar for
navigation, too!
- There are many expanded word processing
features: a thesaurus; insertion of images; and links to files on your hard drive, to web pages, and even to other journal entries!
- LJ2 lets you select from six color themes. Go to File menu>Preferences>Theme tab to make your color theme selection. The background colors, as well as accent colors change.
- The
Timeline is now expanded to a full screen, and you can add photos, landmark dates, audio and video files, and up to four time periods.
- Now File maintenance is easier than ever because you can select the location of your journal files. By default the journal files, a folder called [YourName], is located in My Documents>LifeJournal. For
people who want to keep their
journal entries on more than one computer, the easiest thing is to keep
your journal entries on USB flash drives (also called keychain drives,
thumb drives, memory sticks). We can’t resist the opportunity to say once again: we strongly recommend that you often BACK UP your files (File menu>Backup).
Converting LifeJournal 1
to LifeJournal 2
If
you have LJ1 on your computer, when you install LJ2 into that computer,
your data from LJ1 will automatically be converted (copied and
transferred) to LJ2. Before converting your LJ1 data make sure that the
following conditions exist:
- Version 1.4.X of LifeJournal is installed. (To find out what version of LJ you have, open the program, go to the Help menu>About
LifeJournal.)
- LJ1 is registered (The serial number/key is entered, so the program is not running as a demo.)
- LJ1 closed (The program is not running.)
When
you install LJ2, install it into a DIFFERENT directory than LifeJournal
1. By default LifeJournal 2 will install into C:\Program
Files\LifeJournal2. (LJ1 is installed by default into C:\Program
Files\LifeJournal.) You can be assured that your LJ1 data will
remain intact after you upgrade to LJ2.
Here’s the detailed step-by-step procedure on how to convert LJ1 to LJ2:
- Make sure LJ1 (version 1.4) is closed.
- Go to www.lifejournal.com and click the Download demo button. Complete the form and click the Submit button.
You’ll receive an e-mail within a minute or two with the link to the web page where you can download the demo.
- Download the LifeJournal 2 demo and remember its location. The file, about 10 MB, is called LJ2_Demo.exe.
- Double click the LJ2_Demo.exe file and the installation will begin. It may take a few minutes to convert the files; please do not interrupt the process.
- Enter
your key so you can add more journal entries. Without the key, if you
have more than 15 journal entries, you won't be able to add more. You
can purchase the key from our shopping cart.
You
may choose to uninstall LJ1 after a few days when you feel comfortable
that LJ2 has converted all your journal entries and that it is running
smoothly. To uninstall LJ1, go to the Control
Panel>Add or Remove Programs. Select “LifeJournal” and click the
“Remove” button. You can then delete the LifeJournal (1, not 2)
directory.
How to purchase the upgrade key for LifeJournal 2To purchase the key for LifeJournal 2, go to www.lifejournal.com and click the “Buy LifeJournal” button. To purchase the
upgrade, click “LifeJournal 2.0 Upgrade.” The cost for the upgrade is $14.95. You
must verify that you have already purchased LJ1 by entering the e-mail
address that you used when you purchased or registered LJ1. If
you aren’t sure which e-mail address you used when you purchased the
program, you can go back and try different e-mail addresses.
If you aren’t able to verify your LifeJournal 1 purchase while purchasing online, but
you do have some proof of purchase, send an email to upgrade@lifejournal.com.
Include as much supporting information as possible such as your name,
previous email addresses, serial number/download key, your invoice
number, where you purchased the program. We will manually search our
databases and will respond to you as soon as possible.
If you cannot supply and we cannot find any proof of purchase for LJ1, you may purchase LJ2
at full price. In that case, your LJ1 data will still be converted to LJ2.
Contacting Tech Support
Before you contact tech support, we strongly encourage you to go to our Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) page. If you don’t find your question answered in this list of questions, click “Post a Question” at
the top of that page.
A
form will appear with fields to enter your name, e-mail address, and
question. Click the “Submit” button and the information will be sent to
our Tech Support team. We do our best to answer questions within 24 hours during business days. You’ll receive a response via e-mail. Your question is sent privately and not posted on our web pages. Tips: Adding Your Own Daily Pulse Scales
One
feature that we expanded in LJ2 is the Daily Pulse. Now you can track
and define up to ten scales—tracking objective or subjective
characteristics. As before, in LJ1, you can double click points on the
graph to access journal entries that correspond by date.
Use
this innovative tool to discover more about your trends and cycles; to
learn how one tracked behavior or action corresponds with others; and
to gain deeper understanding of your life by reading journal entries
corresponding to pulse points.
Here’s how to define your own Daily Pulse
scales:
- To add your own Daily Pulse Scales open the Input Daily Pulse dialog by clicking the Pulse Input toolbar button.
- In the top left corner of the Daily Pulse Input dialog, there is an icon that looks like a capital 'I' with a blue filled circle in it. Mouse over that and the tooltip Manage Daily Pulse Scales appears; click it
and the Manage Daily Pulse Scales dialog opens.
- In this Manage Daily Pulse Scales dialog, click on the unassigned
scale on the left column and change the Title, Units, Color, and Upper,
Lower, and Ideal numbers to reflect the new scale you would like. You
can either use the drop down menu to make a selection, or click in the
text box and type in whatever you would like.
- Click the Enter button after creating each
new scale and the OK button to close the dialog and save all the changes that you have made.
You don’t have to define all ten Daily Pulse scales at one once.
