Do any of the butter
knives in your silverware drawer have crumpled tips? Several in my kitchen drawer do as a result
of times when someone grabbed a butter knife to loosen or tighten a screw, or
pry off a lid. Most of the time, when
I’ve used that technique—the outcome is unsatisfactory: the screw isn’t
loosened and the silverware is ruined.
Because we know that
people use journals for different purposes, we are developing a set of
LifeJournal programs that are dedicated to particular groups of
people—designing the most useful and efficient tool for the job. We already
have LifeJournal for Writers (writers.lifejournal.com) and LifeJournal for
Educators (educators.lifejournal.com). Today we announce a third version: LifeJournal for Staying Sober and
Preventing Relapse (stayingsober.lifejournal.com). We are honored to work with Dr. Dennis Daley—a highly respected
expert in the field of addictions. Please read the article below and visit the
website for more information.
So, just as I
recommend not prying lids open with butter knives, or buttering your bread with
a screwdriver, I suggest that if you are struggling with an addiction, that you
use the best journal writing tool for the job: LifeJournal for Staying Sober
and Preventing Relapse (LJSS).
In addition to
describing LJSS in this newsletter, we include some tips about best practices
for assigning topics to your journal entries.
Sincerely,
Ruth Folit

A New Version: LifeJournal for Staying Sober and Preventing
Relapse
The latest version of LifeJournal is for those who want to
stop drinking alcohol and/or abusing
drugs for good. Chronicles Software
Company joined forces with Dr. Dennis Daley
who is Chief of Addiction Medicine Services, and an Associate Professor of
Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Department of
Psychiatry, at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) in Pittsburgh.
Dr. Daley has been involved in managing and providing inpatient and outpatient
treatment services for alcohol and drug problems for over two decades.
For years Dr. Daley has recommended journal writing in his
treatment of those addicted to alcohol or drugs. He explains, “Recovery from
addiction requires hard work, a proper attitude and learning skills to stay
sober, not drinking alcohol or using other drugs. Successful recovery
involves changing attitudes, acquiring knowledge, and developing skills to meet
the many challenges of sobriety. LifeJournal for Staying Sober and
Preventing Relapse is an easy-to-learn, easy-to-use, and effective tool to
reflect upon your experiences and focus on positive change strategies for
recovery. The program is holistic and comprehensive in its approach to
recovery, recognizing the importance of physical, psychological, social, and
spiritual components."
LifeJournal for Staying Sober and Preventing Relapse (LJSS)
combines the structure of the LifeJournal program with Dr. Daley’s Prompts,
selected Quotes, a default Topics List, and default Daily Pulse scales. The LJSSTip
of the Day offers encouragement, support, and continuity in moving through the
sometimes difficult steps of recovery. The blending of the LifeJournal program
with the expertise of Dr. Dennis Daley creates a unique and powerful tool to
help alcohol and drug abusers succeed in recovering from their addictions.
LifeJournal for Staying
Sober: Installation, Expansion, and Purchasing
We invite you to download
the LJSS demo. If you do not already have a LJ program downloaded on your
computer, simply go to stayingsober.lifejournal.com/download and download the
installation file.
However, if you have LJ2 or
any of the specialized versions installed on your computer, you can download
and install the LJSS program, but because of the way the two programs
integrate, you won’t be able to see LJSS in action. In order to use the demo
you will need to purchase and enter the LJSS key.
If you want to see and test
the LJSS version before you purchase the key, you could download the demo onto
a second computer, one on which none of the other versions has been installed.
And, if you do choose to
add the new staying sober version to your existing version, you will retain
your current journal entries and other journal data (Daily Prompts, Timeline,
and your added Quotes and Prompts) and gain the new staying sober prompts,
quotes, and additional topics in the Topics List.
If you have the vanilla version
of LifeJournal 1 or 2, you can purchase LifeJournal for Staying Sober and
Preventing Relapse. If you have LJ2, go to
stayingsober.lifejournal.com/ordering and click this link: “LifeJournal for
Staying Sober: expand LifeJournal 2.0.” If you have LJ1, go to stayingsober.lifejournal.com/ordering
and click “Upgrade to LifeJournal for Staying Sober from LifeJournal 1.”
The cost of expanding from LJ2 to LJSS is $15.95. The cost of the
upgrading from LJ1 to LJSS is $24.95. LifeJournal for Staying Sober costs $44.95
for the download; $6.00 shipping and handling costs for US Mail delivery of a
CD.
Tips:
Assigning Topics—The Finer Points
Perhaps the best way
to assign topics to a journal entry is AFTER writing it because that practice
allows you to write naturally, in the flow, and without breaking up your train
of thought. After completing an entry, re-read to determine the main topics. To
assign a topic to the whole entry, click that topic on the Topic List and it
will appear in the Entry Topics box on the top part of the Topics Sidebar.
It may make sense to
assign at least one topic to a journal entry—even if what you have written is
no more than blowing off steam. (In that
case, you can assign a topic from the feeling category.)
During the
re-reading, also can look for the gems, insights, or important points in the
entry and assign topics to these sentences or paragraphs so you can easily find
them later. Click and drag the mouse over the text and click the topic in the
Topics List. You’ll see that topic is listed in the Entry Topics box in the top
portion of the Topics Sidebar and a
highlight icon will appear next to it. If you click the topic the highlighted
passage(s) will appear.
Also, here are a few
tips about the finer points of assigning topics to passages: If you do assign a topic to a passage of
text, then when you place your cursor in that text, the highlighting—the block
of color behind the text—will appear. Any words that you add at the beginning,
middle, or end of the passage will automatically be included in the highlighted
passage.
The way to stop
assigning the topic(s) to the highlighted passage is easy: Click the “Esc” key
found at the top left corner of your keyboard, or click the “F12” key on the
top right part of your keyboard.
