LifeJournal Newsletter - September, 2007
|
|
Introduction
This
month's newsletter brings you information about journaling and writing
prompts from two writers. Dr. Rachel Ballon, dubbed "Dr. Hollywood" by
the Los Angeles Times, is a writer and psychologist who works with many
writers in the Lost Angeles area. She has a new book called The Writers
Portable Therapist: 25 Sessions to a Creativity Cure. After reading her
book I thought some of you would be interested in learning about her
work, so I asked her for an interview, to which she readily agreed.
Also, Sheila Bender, our content partner for LifeJournal for Writers, wrote a piece with prompts that stoke the creative mind.
I
am pleased to report that we have almost 9,000 subscribers to our free
monthly newsletter and I'm hoping to reach the goal of 10,000
subscribers sometime in the next several months. I have a favor to ask:
If you know a friend, colleague, and/or family member who currently
keeps a journal, or would like to start keeping a journal, would you
forward this newsletter to them? Over the years we've found that people
who keep journals often know others who do. I so appreciate the many
customers who tell us how they have been spreading the word about
LifeJournal to other like-minded people. Thanks!
Sincerely,
Ruth Folit

Interview of Rachel Ballon, author of The Writer's Portable Therapist
In Rachel Ballon’s book The Writer’s Portable Therapist: 25 Sessions to a Creativity Cure,
she writes about the hobgoblins of writers: self-doubt,
procrastination, unrealistic expectations. Ballon offers nuggets of
advice along with a practical exercise at the end of each chapter.
Below are the questions I’ve posed and Dr. Ballon’s responses:
Q. Tell us a little about your background: How long have you been in
practice? How many clients have you seen who are writers looking for
help? Who is the typical/composite person who you help in becoming a
more creative, productive writer?

Writing Prompts by Sheila Bender, content partner of LifeJournal for Writers
I
have been working on devising prompts that help writers work with
seemingly unconnected images and anecdotes from their lives. Here are
five of these prompts meant to help you use the arrangement and
juxtaposition of images and anecdotes to build toward insight in your
writing. Presented together and titled, the sections you write become larger than the sum of their parts:
