Snapshot: A Set of Prompts

written November 16, 2006

My parents weren't committed photographers, but I enjoy revisiting the photos my parents took while I was growing up. I learn something new each time I re-examine them.

Photos are one kind of snapshots to review, but I'd like to offer another type of snapshot: a set of 20 questions, whose answers will create a picture in words of who you are. You can answer these questions annually, perhaps close to your birthday or at the beginning of the year, or just randomly as the mood strikes. The prompts are listed below:

  1. How do you spend your time?
  2. What movie or book have you especially enjoyed recently? What kind of music do you listen to these days?
  3. What have you learned about yourself recently?
  4. What events, both personal and in the news, have touched you?
  5. How is your health?
  6. What challenges are you working on in your personal life? What milestones have you reached in your personal life?
  1. What challenges are you working on in your professional life? What milestones have you recently reached in your professional life?
  2. If you are involved in a primary relationship, how is it going?
  3. With whom are you spending most of your free social time?
  4. How do you spend your leisure time? What do you do for fun?
  5. What is happening with your family? What are your current family dynamics?
  6. Have you recently had recurring or similar dreams, or a dream that especially stands out for you? Describe the dream.
  7. Spend a few minutes with your eyes closed, relaxing, and breathing deeply. Let yourself drift into a deeper intuitive state. What image(s) appear? Record them in detail and hear what they have to say to you.
  8. What new material possession are you currently enjoying?
  9. Describe your physical self: your clothes, weight, level of fitness and energy, hairstyle,
  10. What are your favorite--colors, activities, type of music, magazines, fashion, friends, car, interests?
  11. How would you describe the overall mood, tone, or rhythm of your life during the last several months?
  12. What are your goals or dreams for the upcoming six months?
  13. What changes do you hope to see the next time you take your "snapshot"?
  14. What else do you need to add to complete this "snapshot" of yourself?

If you have previous "snapshots" of yourself, review them and note the changes that you observe.

Remember to create some identifying feature to index these snapshot answers; for example, title the entry “Snapshot,”  or assign the topic “Snapshot”—so that over time you can find annual set of entries to compare and contrast.
